Stick & Targe — Ages 18+

Highland-inspired martial arts using stick and small shield.

Stick & Targe draws from the Scottish Highland tradition of fighting with a short stick (or sword) and a small round shield (targe). This dynamic system teaches students to attack and defend simultaneously, developing ambidexterity, quick reflexes, and aggressive tactical thinking. It's fast, physical, and deeply rewarding.

Why we train this

The targe tradition represents one of the most practical and adaptable fighting systems in European history. Training with sword and shield develops coordination between offense and defense that no single-weapon system can match. Highland martial arts connect us to a fierce warrior tradition that valued courage, speed, and adaptability.

Historic roots

Stick & Targe draws from the Scottish Highland tradition of sword-and-shield combat. Highland warriors carried the targe — a small, studded round shield — paired with a basket-hilted broadsword. This system was central to clan warfare and was famously wielded at battles like Killiecrankie and Culloden. At BladeFit, we preserve these techniques through safe, modern training.
